Toward a Horizon of Repair – the Emanuel Story
The Oregon Synod welcomes you to join us as we explore the story of the Emanuel Hospital expansion from a lesser-known perspective, one that centers the families and businesses affected.
The Alcena has been awarded funding!
We did it! On February 8th, the Portland Housing Bureau (PHB) announced its award of $11,250,000 for The Alcena. This is a HUGE step forward! St. Philip is so proud to partner with Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives, Inc., in their mission to increase stability for low-income and vulnerable residents in N/NE Portland, especially Black residents. We are also so grateful that a seed planted decades ago by the parishioners of St. Philip, to build affordable housing for seniors, is finally coming to fruition. As Mother Alcena Boozer said when she heard the news, “Hallelujah and Amen!”
Walking and Talking: Meditating Together
Last Sunday (Jan 30th) a group of St. Philip folks walked the block around Matt Dishman Community Center, observing the weather, the creatures, the land that surrounds our church. The purpose of a Walking Meditation is to use all our senses to experience our parish neighborhood at a deeper level – the land, the trees and plantings, the creatures, and the neighbors who reside close to STPD. Afterwards, we gathered to share our perceptions, thoughts, and feelings about the experience.…

Annual Meeting Liturgy: January 23rd
Our Annual Meeting is woven into our Sunday Eucharist as a reminder that it is the work of every other day of the week that makes our work together on Sundays possible, and it is our work on Sunday to celebrate in gratitude and hope the many ways in which God works through us as individuals and as a community.
January Housing Update: P-BOS, 130 NE Knott, and Kafoury Court Funding
The Alcena and P-BOS Funding In the wake of learning that we did not receive the M-BOS last fall, we were invited by the Portland Housing Bureau (PHB) to re-apply for the same bucket of money, the ‘P-BOS’. In December, the P-BOS submission was completed. It was based on the M-BOS submission which was not accepted, but which received specific recommendations from PHB for a second submission. The total amount requested is $11,250,000. Salazar Architects was brought on as an…

FRIDAY: Parents, Students Gather to Save Dr. MLK Jr. Elementary School
PPS plans to move Harriet Tubman Middle School and is considering dismantling Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School to do so. To kick off Dr. MLK Jr. Day weekend, community members are gathering Friday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. to celebrate Dr. MLK Jr Elementary School with a student parade, food (to-go), live art project, and a loud, clear call to PPS: “Invest in our schools, don’t shut us down.”
Omicron and N95/KN95 Masks
Due to the high transmissibility of Omicron, we are asking all participants to wear an N95 or KN95 mask during Sunday liturgy. These masks are significantly more protective than cloth masks, and will allow us to more safely pray and sing together. You may bring your own N95 or KN95 mask, but it may not have ventilation holes. Please note that the popular blue surgical masks do not qualify as N95 or KN95 masks. If you do not have an…

2021 Tree of Life
This year, St. Philip the Deacon is supporting eight organizations as a part of our Tree of Life. Saying “Yes” to God means supporting the work of the organizations around us that seek God’s justice, mercy, and peace.
